(This is the first installment of a series of Prof. Pauline White's e-mail logs she began in the Spring of 2008 when she first arrived to teach at the Department of English of Wonkwang University. She sends it out to friends and family to tell them about life in Korea and now she wants to share her thoughts with you.)
Day 1

Hi Everyone,
Just a note to let you know I arrived safe but very tired in Seoul on Sunday. My flight left at 12:30 a.m., and I managed not to sleep a wink. My friends met me at the airport at 6:00 a.m. We sent my luggage on ahead. (Alas as I write this Monday morning, I'm still waiting for my toothbrush and other necessities). On arriving at an apartment in Seoul, I took a short nap and then off to the Seoul National Museum to see the Van Gogh exhibit. Though the show has been there for three months, I think everyone in Seoul chose Sunday to visit it. The line began about a block away from the door and turned back on itself several times to form a sinuous line that snaked on endlessly even after we had entered the museum. The program was worth seeing.

I arrived in Iksan about 8:30 p.m. and was greeted warmly by more friends. At their home, I went immediately to bed. They have prepared a nice room for me. This morning Kum-sook treated me to the family bed in the study room. It is heated and gives a full body massage. I love the gadgets and mechanics of oriental medicine.
Well, I'll keep you posted. Any questions about my stay here, feel free to ask.

Luv,
Pauline
